Abe Zelmanowitz Humanitarian Award presentation
October 30, 2014 @ 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Concepts of Independence, an organization devoted to helping people with disabilities to live independently, will present this year’s Abe Zelmanowitz Humanitarian Award to two FDNY firefighters, Lawrence Hollingsworth, a 10-year FDNY veteran, and Damion Waite, who has 9 years on the job, for their rescue of three people, one of whom was in a wheelchair, in January 2014.
The Abe Zelmanowitz Humanitarian Award honors the courage and self-sacrifice of Abe Zelmanowitz, who, during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2014, remained with his wheelchair-bound friend, Ed Beyea, rather than escape from World Trade Center One.
The award in Zelmanowitz’s honor will be presented as part of the Concepts of Independence gala on Thursday, October 30, 2014 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. The event will be held at the Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. Fire Commissioner and former Chief of Department of the FDNY, Dan Nigro, will speak at the gala to discuss how the FDNY aids people with disabilities.
