Deadline to remove items from the Family Room

June 15, 2014

A new family room is open on the Atrium Terrace level of the Museum, providing a private place of comfort and memorialization exclusively for 9/11 family members. This room will replace the temporary family room on the 20th floor of One Liberty Plaza, which will close on June 15.

Recognizing the emotional and historical significance of the One Liberty Plaza family room, steps are being taken to make certain that any items remaining in the room after June 15 are carefully and respectfully documented, removed, and archived. The remaining materials will be stored securely, catalogued, and preserved. This effort is being led by the Family Room Committee, a group of 9/11 family members who have come together to be stewards of both spaces. The Committee is working with the 9/11 Memorial and the New York State Museum to preserve the history of the One Liberty Plaza family room and ensure that the new family room in the Museum remains a sustainable, contemplative space for quiet reflection and tribute.

The Family Room Committee asks for your cooperation in adhering to the guidelines below. Should you need assistance or if you wish to volunteer for this effort, please contact 911familyroominfo@gmail.com or call (212) 416-5700.

Before the One Liberty Plaza family room closes on June 15: • You can retrieve or transfer materials placed in the One Liberty Plaza family room through June 15 (materials should be carefully removed so as to not damage other tribute items). • If you are unable to retrieve or transfer materials contact the Committee for assistance.

Guidelines from the Committee for placing tribute material in the 9/11 Memorial Museum family room: • Tribute items should be no larger than 8.5 x 11 inches in size and affixed only to tackable surfaces using only the supplies provided. • Items placed elsewhere or those exceeding the size guidelines will either be relocated or removed. • Members of the media should not be escorted into the family room.
