Dedication of the Tower of Voices – Shanksville, PA
September 9, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
The final portion of the Flight 93 National Memorial, a 93-foot tall wind chime called the Tower of Voices, will be dedicated at 1:00pm on Saturday, September 9, 2018 at the entrance of the Flight 93 National Memorial.
The Tower contains 40 chimes of different sizes and tones, each representing one passenger or crew member whose voice was silenced by terrorists during the attacks of September 11, 2001.
The ceremony is open to the public, though only 5,000 people will be able to attend. Attendance will be decided on a first-come, first-served basis.
Special guests at the ceremony will be members of the crew of the USS Somerset, the ship named in honor of Flight 93’s brave passengers and crew.
More information and photos are available here. Please call 814-893-6322 for more information.
You can livestream the ceremony here.
The 40 passengers and crew members aboard United Flight 93, the fourth and last plane hijacked in the attacks, learned from making telephone calls the likely fate of their plane. They decided not to let their flight hurt anyone on the ground, whatever the cost to themselves. Crew and passengers stormed the cockpit and brought the plane down in a deserted field in rural Pennsylvania. United Flight 93 was the only one of the planes hijacked on September 11, 2001 that hurt no one on the ground.
Please note that the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial will not be holding the annual September 10 Luminaria Ceremony this year. The Luminaria Ceremony will continue on the twentieth anniversary in September 2021.
