Anniversary of Black Sunday
January 23, 2013
January 23, 2013 is the eighth anniversary of Black Sunday, the only day in FDNY history in which firefighters were killed in two separate fires.
FF Richard Sclafani was killed after becoming trapped in a basement fire in Brooklyn and Lt. Curtis Meyran and FF John Bellew (later promoted) were killed jumping from a window after becoming surrounded by flames in an illegally divided sublet in the Bronx. Four other firefighters were also forced to jump, all sustaining critical injuries. One of them, Lt. Joseph diBernardo, died of those injuries in 2012.
