“Wrong turn: America’s deadly embrace with counterinsurgency”

October 26, 2012 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The speaker at the next John Jay Center on Terrorism Friday Seminar will be Colonel Gian P. Gentile, a US Army officer and history professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He will speak at John Jay Center on Terrorism on Friday, October 26, 2012, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm. Col. Gentile will speak on the topic Wrong turn: America’s deadly embrace with counterinsurgency.

Col. Gentile is a prominent critic of the US military’s approach to counterinsurgency.  He has argued that the surge was not the primary cause of the post-2006 reduction in violence in Iraq, and that effective counterinsurgency tactics were practiced by American troops in Iraq from 2003 on, rather than being introduced in 2006-7.

Gentile argues that the prominence of counterinsurgency has led to an unrealistic view of the American military’s power and capacity to change the world.

Prof. Gentile has  PhD in history from Stanford University. He served two tours in Iraq, one with a combat brigade in Tikrit and the second with a cavalry unit in Baghdad.  In 2001 he published How Effective Is Strategic Bombing?
