Installation of World Trade Center steel at Kennedy Space Center
August 14, 2015 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
On Friday, August 14, 2015, the Kennedy Space Center’s Fire Station 1 will install a one-ton beam from the World Trade Center in front of their firehouse as a memorial to the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
KSC Fire Rescue’s current 9/11 memorial is a plaque, a pair of concrete replicas of the Twin Towers and a flagpole. The beam will lie across the concrete replicas.
The beam will begin its journey from New York City to Florida on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 and arrive via Philadelphia on Friday, August 14, 2015. August 14, a ceremonial procession north from Miami is expected to reach Cocoa Village around noon, where the final leg of the procession into the Space Center will begin. Law enforcement and fire agencies from Brevard County are expected to participate in the procession. The beam will be installed onto the supports once it reaches the fire station.
The firefighters are raising the funds for the memorial through their new KSC Firefighters’ Memorial Fund.
