Christening of the USS Somerset
July 28, 2012 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
The christening ceremony for the future USS Somerset will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2012 in New Orleans.
Mary Jo Myers, the wife of retired Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is the ship’s sponsor and will break the traditional bottle of champagne across the ship’s bow to christen her.
The president of the Families of Flight 93, Patrick White, cousin of Flight 93 hero Louis Nacke, will be the keynote speaker for the ceremony.
Steel from one of the draglines present at the Flight 93 crash site was used in the bow of the ship.
The USS Somerset takes her name from the county where Shanksville Pennsylvania is located and is one of three US Navy ships named in honour of the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. USS New York is at sea now, and USS Arlington will be commissioned soon.
