Tunnel to Towers bone marrow drive
December 14, 2013 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is hosting a bone marrow drive for Owen Hogan, FF Jimmy Martinez, and everyone who needs a bone marrow transplant on Saturday, December 14, 2013, from 9:00am-4:00pm at the Tunnel to Towers Hurricane Relief Center on Staten Island.
2-year-old Owen Hogan, son of FDNY firefighter Tim Hogan of Engine 216, has aplastic anemia, a bone marrow disorder in which bone marrow stops producing blood cells. Owen has stopped responding to treatments. The next step is a bone marrow transplant, but first, a bone marrow match must be identified. Read Owen’s full story here.
FF Jimmy Martinez of Engine 157 is suffering from the rare blood cancer multiple myeloma, which has become common among those who worked at the World Trade Center site in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks. He also is in need of a bone marrow transplant.
For anyone between 18-55 who is interested all it takes is a simple cheek swab to add yourself to the registry to help Jimmy, Owen or another of the many people waiting for bone marrow transplants.
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation honors the heroism of FF Stephen Siller, who gave his life on September 11, 2001 during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
