Unity Walk – Washington, DC

September 8, 2013 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The ninth annual 9/11 Unity Walk will be held from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sunday, September 8, 2013 in Washington, DC.

Every house of worship on the route – church, gurdwara, mosque, synagogue and temple – on Embassy Row will open their doors. Baha’is, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jews, Muslims and others will come together in friendship.

The event is free, though registration is required, and there is a $10.00 suggested donation. If you would like to purchase a t-shirt, you may do so on the registration link as well. You can also register on the day at noon at Washington Hebrew Congregation, 3935 Macomb St. NW at Massachusetts Avenue.

From 12:00pm to 1:30pm there will be an open house showcasing organizations dedicated to interfaith understanding and initiatives. Doors open at 1:00 for opening ceremonies. After the opening ceremonies, all are invited to walk down Massachusetts Avenue at their own pace, visiting the houses of worship, engaging in conversation with the faith guides walking in the crowd, and attending a variety of activities along the way.

Performers will include the Mosaic Harmony Choir (representing 26 different faiths), a multi-faith band HinJew, and the DC Youth Poetry Slam Team. Charitable activities include collecting shoes to be sent to those in need, bagging fresh produce and assembling trail mix for the homeless. There will also be singing, dancing, meditation, Tai chi, and food.

This year’s walk will honor Nelson Mandela. Speakers will include the South African Ambassador to the US, the president of the Muslim Women Association,  Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and faith leaders from local congregations.
