9/11 Tribute Center programs are offered throughout the year. Lectures, educational workshops and support programs are available to unite family members who lost loved ones, survivors, Lower Manhattan residents, rescue and recovery workers and volunteers who assisted in the aftermath of 9/11. In the spring of 2014, Chris Waltenburg is hiking the Appalachian Trail (at 60 years old) to support the Brent Woodall Foundation for Exceptional Children. The hike will cover more than 2,000 miles and will raise more than $10,000 for autistic children. Those who wish to attend the Boston Marathon on April 21, 2014 are being asked to follow certain safety rules this year. Spectators entering viewing areas may be asked to pass through security checkpoints. Those already inside viewing areas may be asked to open their bags by police or security personnel. Cypress Hills Cemetery will hold their second annual 5-K run through the cemetery to honor NYPD Detective Peter Figoski of the 75th Precinct, who was shot and killed in the line of duty in December 2012.
