Captain Gerald F. DeConto, USN Memorial Scholarship 5-K Run/Walk

September 27, 2015 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

The fourteenth annual Captain Gerald F. DeConto, USN Memorial Scholarship 5-K Run/Walk will take place on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at the Stop & Shop Plaza in Jerry’s hometown of Sandwich, Massachusetts. The event will begin with a memorial ceremony at 9:00am. The course is a scenic 3.1 mile route around the Sandwich Marina, finishing back at the Stop & Shop Plaza.

The Captain Gerald F. DeConto Scholarship Fund was started by Captain DeConto’s family after he was killed in the September 11th terrorist attack on the Pentagon. A scholarship is awarded each year from the fund to a deserving Sandwich High School senior.

The fee to participate is $20.00 for runners and walkers over the age of 18, and $15.00 for those under 18.

Please note that the start of the race has changed. A map of the new route can be found here.  Full details about all aspects of the event are available at the Scholarship’s website here.

Captain Gerald F. DeConto, known as Jerry or “Fish”, was in charge of the US Naval response to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. As he worked, Flight 77 was flown by terrorists into his Pentagon office, killing him and many of his colleagues. He was 44.
