Veteran NYPD detective and Ground Zero hero Barbara Burnette dies from 9/11-related illness

Retired NYPD Detective Barbara Burnette, 58, died on December 30, 2021 of World Trade Center-related lung cancer, report Thomas Tracy and Larry McShane for the New York Daily News.

Detective Burnette spent 23 days at the recovery after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Lung disease forced her into early retirement in 2006 and her health deteriorated since that time.

Despite lung issues and other World Trade Center-related illnesses, Burnette was one of the many recovery workers with serious illnesses who fought for 9/11 healthcare funding in Washington.
