Retired FDNY firefighter John Elges dies from 9/11-related cancer

Retired FDNY Firefighter John Elges has died of World Trade Center-related brain and neck cancer at the age of 60. The disease metastasized to his lungs.

Elges began his career with the FDNY in 1985, was highly decorated during his career, and ended it as a member of Ladder 134 in 2009. He spent 10 days on the pile during the aftermath of the terrorist attacks.

His cancer diagnosis came in 2015, report Thomas Tracy and Esha Ray of the NY Daily News.
