Christmas Honors program pays tribute to local veterans

The ninth annual Christmas Honors wreath-laying ceremony at Fort Smith’s U.S. National Cemetery honored local veterans and those murdered in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

This year’s guest speaker was Deena Burnett Bailey, the widow of Tom Burnett, one of the heroes of United Flight 93.

Saturday’s Christmas Honors event also will serve this year to remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Former Little Rock resident  served as the guest speaker for the ninth annual program. Burnett lost her husband, Tom, on 9/11. He was a passenger on United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked by al-Qaida terrorists. Tom Burnett and two other men, Todd Beamer and Mark Bingham, formed a plan to crash their plane before the terrorists were able to crash it in Washington, D.C. reports the Times Record.
