Massachusetts House approves First Responders Day

The Massachusetts House has passed a bill (H 4161) that would declare the Sunday before Patriots’ Day a day to honor law enforcement officers, EMTs and firefighters.

‘”Day in, day out, these folks perform vital duties,” said Rep. Jim Miceli, who sponsored the bill that would recognize police, firefighters and other emergency responders. “All you have to do is watch the news,”‘ wrote Kaite Lannan of the State House News Service.

Patriots’ Day, which falls on the third Monday of April each year, commemorates the earliest battles of the Revolutionary War. The Boston Marathon is traditionally run on or near Patriots’ Day. First Responders Day would be the Sunday before Patriots’ Day. The link between the date and the Boston Marathon is intentional.

The bill will now move to the Senate.
