Holbrook intersection to be renamed for 9/11 FDNY Captain Vincent Ungaro

FDNY Captain Vincent Ungaro, who died on Oct. 1, 2016 of World Trade Center-related leukemia, will be honored by the renaming of the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Inverness Road in his native town of Holbrook, NY. The new name will be FDNY Captain Vincent Ungaro Way, reports NY Newsday’s Valerie Bauman. Captain Ungaro was 60.

Despite his illness, Captain Ungaro was a tireless advocate for the renewal of the Zadroga Act to help others who were sick from their work at or exposure to the site of the attacks.

His widow, Diane Ungaro, told Newsday, “He always said that he had 15 extra years — because many of his friends died on 9/11 — so he was thankful and grateful for that.”

The official ceremony will be held in the spring of 2018.
