FDNY hero Thomas Phelan, who evacuated hundreds on 9/11, dies at 45 of cancer

FDNT Firefighter Thomas Phelan, who in his former profession of ferry captain evacuated hundreds of people from Lower Manhattan during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, has died of World Trade Center-related cancer at the age of 45, report Thomas Tracy and Rich Schapiro of theĀ New York Daily News.

Firefighter Phelan joined the FDNY in May of 2003, working for Engine 55 in Chinatown and then Staten Island’sĀ Marine 9.
