FDNY denied 9/11 disability benefits for firefighter who suffered depression, PTSD until his death at mental hospital

Retired FDNY Firefighter Joe Battista, 63, died in a Florida mental hospital on April 5, 2018 after a long battle with PTSD and depression, report Dale W. Eisinger, Kerry Burke, and Thomas Tracy for the New York Daily News.

His illness has not been recognized as being caused by the terrorist attacks of 9/11, although he spent months at the World Trade Center site and at the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island, where debris was sifted after the attacks.

Battista was given two funerals, one in Florida, and one at  St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in NYC.
