Family awards scholarship in name of White Plains 9/11 victim

The memory of Sharon Balkcom, a victim of the 9/11 terror attacks, will live on in the life and achievements of a college student whom recently received a scholarship in Balkcom’s name.

The Sharon Balkcom 9/11 Memorial Scholarship fund has given a grant to Toni Benjamin, a junior at Colgate University. Benjamin, who lives in the Bronx, is a two-time recipient of the scholarship.

Balkcom, who lived in White Plains, died in the north tower of the World Trade Center.

In 2009, her family established an endowment at Colgate, Balkcom’s alma mater. Scholarships are awarded to deserving students from the New York  City area.
