FF Thomas J. Foley Memorial Scholarship applications being accepted

The Firefighter Thomas J. Foley Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 as a tribute to an American hero who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. The program is intended to provide a lasting legacy to the life of Firefighter Thomas J. Foley by assisting the children of fellow FDNY firefighters in meeting the expenses of post-secondary educational costs.

College scholarships are offered for students enrolling in an accredited two- or four-year college or university within the continental United States. Scholarship recipients must be the dependent child of an active or retired firefighter or fire officer, whose parent or legal guardian has a minimum of one full year of service at the time of application. Applicants must be high school graduates planning to enter college this fall.

Deadline to comment on the DEIS for the World Trade Center Campus Security Plan

A Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) was drawn up for The World Trade Center Campus Security Plan on April 8, 2013. Following that, a public hearing on the DEIS was held on April 23. Catherine McVay Hughes, chair of Community Board 1 testified at that hearing and drew attention to the need for additional information regarding provisions for future storms and potential flooding; she also requested an extension of air quality monitoring; asked where the Downtown PATH greenmarket would be relocated; and also requested further review of the impact of continued construction vehicle access to the World Trade Center Campus during the completion of the Master Plan. The public were invited to submit written comments on the DEIS to the Lead Agency by 5:00pm on May 8 (30 days after the Notice of Completion was issued). That deadline has now been extended to 5:00pm on Wednesday, May 22, 2013. FF Michael Kiefer Educational Grant Awards Deadline

Twelve FF Michael Kiefer Educational Awards worth $500 each are available through the New York Firefighters’ Burn Center Foundation. These grants shall be awarded for various types of schooling, be it academic, technical or a personal interest course. Submission dates are April 15, 2013 - June 15, 2013.

Eligibility is restricted to members of the FDNY, from probationary firefighters to chief officers, including fire marshals, supervising fire marshals, marine engineers, pilots, and wipers.

Deadline to register known claims for September 11th Victims’ Compensation Fund/ Zadroga Act

The deadline to register for a September 11th Victims’ Compensation Fund (Zadroga) claim for KNOWN symptoms, diagnoses and disabilities is October 2013.

The deadline to register for a September 11th Victims’ Compensation Fund claim for any NEW symptoms & diagnoses is October 2016.

There are THREE steps involved in making a claim: 1. You must register (this is easy).  2. You must establish eligibility and receive your claim number. 3. You must apply for compensation. The process is complex — 80% of claimants are using attorneys — but it is possible to register without an attorney.

When making any inquiry about your case, you must have your claim number. (Note: a claim number can also be called a “claimant identification number” or a “case number”.)
