9/11 Tribute Center programs are offered throughout the year. Lectures, educational workshops and support programs are available to unite family members who lost loved ones, survivors, Lower Manhattan residents, rescue and recovery workers and volunteers who assisted in the aftermath of 9/11. The Madeline Amy Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery is presented every September 11th to a Massachusetts resident who demonstrates exceptional bravery without regard for personal safety in honor of Flight Attendant Madeline Amy Sweeney. Madeline Amy Sweeney was working aboard American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, 2001. She made contact with airline personnel on the ground and provided them with information about the terrorists that enabled the investigation to begin. She was 35. Captain William E. Butler, retired FDNY and September 11th family member, died on July 13, 2013 of site-related pulmonary fibrosis. His son, Firefighter Thomas Butler, was killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
