Film screening: “16 Acres” – New York, NY

September 11, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Join the Museum of the City of New York on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 2:00pm for a screening of 16 Acres and The Second Day, two documentary films that chronicle the terrorist attacks of September 11th and their aftermath.

The award-winning 2012 documentary 16 Acres (2:00pm) explores the protracted, complex reconstruction of Ground Zero in lower Manhattan. From day one, the site embodied near-impossible-to-fulfill expectations: the new buildings planned for these roughly ten square blocks had to acknowledge painful recent history and signal remembrance while also communicating rebirth, hope, and corporate profitability. The film charts some of the intense political, economic, architectural, and emotional debates that accompanied the rise of Freedom Tower, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, and other key buildings at Ground Zero.

The Second Day (3:45pm) is a documentary created by the young New Yorker Brook Peters who was only four years old and attending his second day of kindergarten a few blocks from the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. At age 11, Brook decided to make a film about the attacks giving his classmates, teachers, counselors, and firefighters the opportunity to reflect back on what they had seen and felt on September 11th and the days that followed.
