Lights, Camera… Hack! Strategic Implications of the Sony Cyber Attack

January 15, 2015 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

The Bipartisan Policy Center will host a panel discussion on the strategic implications of the recent cyber attack on Sony on Thursday, January 15, 2014 from 3:30pm to 5:00pm at the offices of the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington DC.

Panelists will include Mike Rogers, former chairman, House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence; General (Ret.) Michael Hayden, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency & National Security Agency and Dr. Paul Stockton, former Assistant Secretary of Defense of Homeland Defense and Americas’ Security Affairs. The discussion will be moderated by Ellen Nakashima of The Washington Post.

The cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment — widely attributed to North Korea over the film, The Interview — is the latest in a series of major network intrusions that have received wide media coverage. Unlike previous attacks on Target, Home Depot and others, this one resulted in a national discussion on cybersecurity and the appropriate response to cyber attacks, resulting in the initial decision to not release the movie.

Among the questions to be discussed are:

  • How should the Sony attack be classified? As an act of industrial espionage or an attack on the United States?
  • What is the significance of the U.S. ability to attribute the attack to North Korea?
  • What we can learn about declaratory policy in cyber space from this incident?
