‘Eternal’ flame in Naperville’s 9/11 memorial constantly extinguished

An “eternal” flame forming the centerpiece of the Commander Dan Shanower/September 11, 2001 Memorial by the Naperville Municipal Center continually goes out and needs relighting on a regular basis, reports Bill Bird in the Naperville Sun.

A surveillance camera monitoring the memorial has made officials aware of when the flame has gone out.

Research into eternal flames is being carried out to see whether a better model can be found for the memorial.

The memorial is named for U.S. Navy Commander Dan Shanower, who was killed in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the Pentagon. Commander Shanower was a native of Naperville.
